Review: The Hiring Fair by Laura Strickland (Part of The Wild Rose Press' "Help Wanted Series")

THE HIRING FAIR
part of The Wild Rose Press' "Help Wanted Series"

by Laura Strickland

Publisher: The Wild Rose Press
Genre: Historical Romance

Brutally dispossessed during the Highland Clearances, Tam Sutherland comes to the hiring fair at Oban, Scotland hoping to find a job for the season. But his maimed right hand, inflicted by the same cruel factor responsible for his parents’ deaths, means he’s one of few men available when the beautiful woman makes her surprising announcement: she’s looking not for a hand but a husband, not just for the season but forever.

Annie MacCallum is under threat from a brutal factor also, back at her home farm—one who preys on unmarried women. If she’s to protect all those who rely on her, including her beloved animals, she must have a husband, if only in name. Secretly glad when the attractive Tam takes up her proposition, she doesn’t realize she’s dragging him into a situation that will trigger old demons. Nor does she expect to give him her heart.

In a low tone he asked, “This marriage you ha’ in mind, will it be legal wi’ no banns being read?”

“Father Alban is an old friend of my uncle, and I ha’ spoken to him of this. He will accommodate me.”

“Aye, and what will your uncle think o’ this scheme of yours?”

“Very little, I imagine. He is dead.”

Sutherland contemplated that without comment.

St. Lyon’s church loomed ahead, appearing all at once out of the swirling snow. Annie turned to Jockie.

“You lead Old Rake round back and join us inside where you can get warm, eh?”

Jockie nodded and clattered off.

Annie turned to Sutherland and looked into his face, only to be struck again by how handsome he looked. But that had naught to do with anything, and she could not let it sway her good sense, not when she’d come so far.

“Before we go inside, I want to be sure I ha’ your understanding. This is no’ an ordinary marriage but something more in the manner of a hiring, which is why I came to the fair in the first place.”

He inclined his shaggy head toward her slightly. “A hiring wi’out wages. That is against the law, you do ken.”

She swept him with her gaze. “And are you a man to adhere to arbitrary laws? I confess, I did no’ get that impression.”

“And,” he returned, “are you a woman who needs to hire a husband?” He echoed her. “I confess, I did no’ get that impression.” He returned her stare, slow and attentive. “You are certainly bonnie enough to snare a husband the usual way.”

To her surprise, Annie felt a wave of heat course through her. “I do no’ want a usual kind o’ husband. I want one who will tak’ my orders and stay clear o’ my bed. Be sure you are that man before we go inside and speak these vows.”

One of Sutherland’s eyebrows quirked up. “I was right at the outset; you are mad.”

“So we ha’ already determined,” Annie agreed, beginning to grow edgy again. What if he refused at this late moment? Where would she find a substitute, with the market now deserted and the snow falling? Besides, she discovered she did not want a substitute; for reasons she did not quite understand, she wanted this man and no other.

“There is a story behind this,” he said mildly. “I confess, I would like to hear it.”

“Perhaps you shall, but not now—there is no time.” Annie drew a breath and sought to deny the fear rising inside her, the fear that he might walk away from her after all.

But that curious smile crossed his lips again.

“Are you coming wi’ me?” she pressed.

“It seems a damned clever way to secure the services of a farm worker whilst paying no wages,” he said. “But aye, for all that, I will come along wi’ you.”

Review:
     Stars: 4 stars

I have read many historical romances that are normally set in Scotland with big buff Highlanders and cunning women, but this book really puts a twist on that norm.  A desperate women trying to save her family farm by going to the Hiring Fair to find a husband. A man with a broken spirit and hand looking for something or someone to help him find peace. I really like the plot that this book gives, but there are a few things that I need to talk about. Since this novel is set in Scotland during the the Highland period, the dialect they use is a little bit hard to understand and translate into the English we use today. Another thing about this book and that didn't particularly like was the back-and-forth saving of Annie MacCallum and Tam Sutherland.  Annie gets in trouble and Tam has to save her, Tam gets in trouble and Annie has to save him and so on and so forth. This really plays into the women need saving theme that many Scottish Historical Romances use. This book just takes that theme and takes it to another level. Overall, this novel has a great plot that reverses gender roles with Annie being the one who brings in the money and Tam being the helping hand. There are a few quirks, but what book would be good if there weren't any quirks? I give this 4/5 stars.

Born in Buffalo and raised on the Niagara Frontier, Laura Strickland has been an avid reader and writer since childhood. To her the spunky, tenacious, undefeatable ethnic mix that is Buffalo spells the perfect setting for a little Steampunk, so she created her own Victorian world there. She knows the people of Buffalo are stronger, tougher and smarter than those who haven’t survived the muggy summers and blizzard blasts found on the shores of the mighty Niagara. Tough enough to survive a squad of automatons? Well, just maybe.

BLURB

"For fractured souls are like magnets.
Drawn to collide into an impossible bliss…"

Labeled a ‘Cursed’ woman of Eve from birth, Maddie has endured nothing but pain and repression at the hands of The Order’s most abusive elder, Moses. Now living with her sister in The Hangmen’s secluded compound, finally, Maddie, is free. Free from the suffocating faith she no longer believes in. Free from endless years of physical and mental torment.

Just… free…

At age twenty-one, the timid and shy Maddie is content to live within the confines of her new home—safe from the outside world, safe from harm and, strangely, protected by the Hangmen’s most volatile member; the heavily pierced and tattooed, Flame.

Flame.

The man who ceaselessly watches over her with his midnight dark and searing eyes. The man who protects her with a breath-taking intensity. And the man who stirs something deep within her numbed heart.

But when circumstances conspire for Flame to need HER help, Maddie bravely risks it all for the broken man who has captivated her fragile soul.

The Hangmen’s most infamous member, Flame, is ruled by one thing—anger. Plagued by haunting demons from his past, an all-consuming rage, and isolated by an abhorrent hatred of being touched, Flame's days are filled with suffocating darkness, pierced only by a single ray of light—Maddie. The shy, beautiful woman he cannot purge from his thoughts. The woman he has an overwhelming need to possess…
... the only person who has ever been able to touch him.

Flame’s mission in life is to protect Maddie, to keep her safe. Until a trigger from his troubled past sends him spiraling into madness, trapping him in the deepest recesses of his disturbed mind.

His Hangmen brothers fear that Flame is beyond saving.

His only hope of salvation: Maddie and her healing light.

My Review

If I could give 1 millions stars, I would, but I think 5 will do

Warning: The Hades Hangmen deal with New Religious Movements, Cults and Sects, and Motorcycle Clubs

I was given an Arc for a honest review.

I LOVE Tillie Cole and her Hades Hangmen novels! I have never read anything book series that was so sexy and yet terrifying at the same time. I hope and pray that there will be other books and I recommend this series to anyone over 18 and is looking for something different and new, while also looking for some HOTT men!  I have read all three books, so I am IN LOVE with Styx, but I love Ky and Flame just as much!

Maddie and Flame are two tortured souls who have been to Hell and back. Flame can't be touched and Maddie doesn't trust anyone other her sister, Mae and Lilah. All three "Cursed Sisters" are from a secret Religious Cult where beauty is shunned and believed to tempt men into sin. These "men" are evil and take women because they are the Elders. Maddie got the worst of all the Elder's. He was a sadistic man who took pleasure in hurting Maddie physically, mentally, and emotionally. Flame was a boy that no one understood except his mother. He was also traumatized.

They meet and the flames finally go cold. Literally. Flame cannot be touched of Hell's Flames are in his veins, in his blood. Maddie is only one who can touch Flame and not get hurt by them. Together, Flame and Maddie confront their pasts and demons because they are each other only salvation. While I am still partial to Styx and Mae, Flame and Maddie's story is one is the most relatable. I might never have gone through either of their traumatizing pasts, but the bullying is something that everyone has gone through whether it is the bullied or the bully theme self. The trauma that they both go through affects their adult selves.

Tillie Cole has outdone herself again with Souls Unfractured and can't wait to see whose story is going to be next!!

My Review:

True Colors:
I love True Colors! They are well written and I wished I had a boyfriend like Eric. He is so trusting, caring, HOTT, and understanding. Especially when Caitlyn tells him she got her power from a homeless man outside the club she was at. Yeah I wouldn't have believed it. Caitlyn is an ordinary girl who gets gifted with the ability to pull off other peoples "masks" to reveal their True Colors. Get what I did there! Anyway, she is a very dynamic character who evolves with the story, but not as much as to sense the life threating danger that comes from seeing peoples true feelings.

Eric is there for support until they start moving in the direction of romance. Eric has a hard time trusting people and Caitlyn can't trust anybody now. Those two throne together make a very interesting couple and detective pair. Along with making new friends, truly loyal friends, Caitlyn, Eric, and the gang find themselves in a battle in which live are at stake.

True Colors is very insightful into the way high school can be a terrible place. Gangs, behind-the-scenes work, secrets, abuse. But with friends who would die for you, there is always support. We also learn that their are many ways why people turn to crime. But that is what friends and family are for. To support you with whatever you do. Just not crime and murder.

Two Faced
This was a great sequel. It shows the absolute best and absolute worst of people. The disgusting side of the world and the understanding. The hate and the love. It is very different from True Colors because even though it dealt with real life occurrences, this was even more real. Not everything is as it seems and people aren't always as bad as they seem. Caitlyn and, especially Eric, leans this lesson the hard way.

What they learn is truly horrifying and tragic. But the best is that they stick together through thick and thin to make sure that their friends are safe. It is this that makes me love this series so much. The powers might not be real, but the emotions, the events, and the people are real. These two books aren't just a pass time reads. They stick with you until the end.

Review Tour: Souls (Grimnirs, #2) by Ednah Walters

SOULS

WARNING: This is CORA'S story: This book may be considered NA (new adult) because it contains some swearing, violence and sex scenes: Suitable for ages 17 and up. A Clean Version will also be available on Amazon.

Eighteen-year-old
Cora Jemison knows what it’s like to date a soul reaper. There are no Friday
night movies, no school dances, and no stolen kisses between classes. It
totally sucks! What makes it even worse, souls pop up when she least expects
it. The last one is not her fault, but it all adds up to zero quality time with
her super hot, scythe-carrying boyfriend, Echo.

Since Cora was
etched with special runes by an evil Immortal, she understands why souls are
drawn to her. She makes the best of it by helping souls find closure while Echo
escorts them to the realm of the dead. Perfect partners, until a dark soul
visits Cora in the dead of the night and Echo decides her soul-helping days are
over.

Cora can either
listen to Echo or follow her instincts. To make matters worse, other reapers
start stalking her, demanding she hand over the soul. Even her Valkyrie friends
think she’s gone too far. But something sinister is coming their way, and the
soul is the key to saving her town, her friends, and her relationship with
Echo. Can she convince Echo to see things her way before it’s too late?

Review

Cora has turned into a kick ass hero. Not sidekick, but hero. But as with all heroes there are some who can't live with that. It seems that Ednah Walter has decided to put more feels into this book then the previous 4 books in the Rune series. Now, I love this series. I might not like what Erik is up to, but nonetheless it is a ongoing story that leaves you wishing for more and hard core shipping characters!! When I signed up for this book I had no idea of what was going to happen. There has been a tragic loss for Raine, Cora's best friend. One that has devastated everyone. Anyway, Cora has been volunteering at a local hospital because of her new gift of being able to see and speak to the dead. One person in particular has Cora going nuts, rightfully so. Her boyfriend, Echo, a Grimnir, doesn't want her working with ghosts. Especially black shadow ghosts. A friend form Echo's past comes back to haunt them. Literally. He is a black ghost, but not that Cora cares. She is compassionate towards most people who don't want to kill her. I would tend to agree with that kind of motto. But nothing is ever as it seems. Especially in this series.

My Review:

The Good: I LOVED IT!!! This is an insightful book about the struggles of what it means to be homeless and privileged yet behind ever mask lies the truth. Anna's mother is never there , Both mentally and physically, after the tragic loss of her father. She needs to be perfect. Get straight A's, go to an Ivy League school like her father, etc. She needs to make him happy instead of herself. Then she meets Dean. Dean is a great guy with is majorly protective, but who wouldn't be after what he went through. They are both alike, but mostly different. You know what they, opposites attract. Anna can help him look for his sister and Dean can teach her about the other side of the city.

This reads like a realistic book. It is very much a YA book, but talks about  suffering that is real in our world. I don't why this related to me since I haven't lost anyone or live on the streets, but it was like John Green's The Fault in Our Stars, it connects with you and doesn't let go until...never.

The Bad: I didn't like the ending. I wish I could seen beyond the resolution with Dean's sister and Anna realizing that she loves Dean and will do anything to be with him. I would've like to see them pass graduation or into college. Other then that, this book was absolutely perfect!
